Having just finished the building of a new house in the New Palestine, Indiana, area, I responded to a knock on the door one afternoon, and was met a young man in his 20’s who eagerly told me that I just had to let him landscape my property. He said he admired the lines of the house and already had some ideas as to how we could accentuate, and compliment those lines. What struck me was, Nathan said he didn’t really do landscaping. He “created spaces”. Intrigued, I informed him that I had just built a house, and definitely didn’t have deep pockets for extensive work. However, I indicated that I was willing to consider some amount of work, if he could come up with a plan. Several weeks later, I was presented with a detailed plan that pretty much knocked my eyes out. It was developed in a modular fashion, which would allow me to add, and pay, in increments, but, at the same time, wouldn't look pieced together. Nathan’s excitement was evident, and contagious, as he referred, not to “plants”, but to “plant material”, as if he was weaving a tapestry that was especially designed for my house. He often referred to the “texture” of a plant, a quality with which he tied the various components together. Maybe it was placing the Russian Sage next to the Knockout Roses, or how the Liriope complimented the Japanese Maple tree. In any case, Nathan was always trying to bring the various components together in such a way as to make me smile, and relax in this “space”. Needless to say, I was hooked. And then the transformation began. I was impressed, day-by-day, with the meticulous attention to detail, the caring way in which Nathan’s crew place the “plant material”, and the extra effort, and hours, Nathan himself gave, sometimes staying late into the evening, just to make sure everything was in its proper place. The development strategy also included a conscious effort to enhance curb appeal, from several directions. This is evident as I walk the sidewalk in front of the house, and watch the visual quality change, with every step I take. It is not a singular picture, only enjoyed from a particular spot, but the composition changes, in a balanced way, as I move along the walkway. In fact, you will notice, in the accompanying photographs, a striking, river rock pathway, which winds through the area, allowing you to actually walk among the various plants, and giving you a unique perspective, and appreciation for the arrangement. As you can see from these photographs, the project is now finished. It goes without saying that we have had numerous compliments from the members of our community. Our neighbors enjoy walking by when the scent of the Magnolia blossoms is in the air, and the Crape Myrtle bushes are in bloom. In fact, with the natural variations in color, they often slow down, or even stop for a moment, just to look. It is easy to make all of these observations because Nathan has purposefully created this space so that something noticeable is happening, and changing, all of the time. Coupling that with carefully placed boulders, and waving grasses, my wife and I are regularly presented with the opportunity to escape from a hectic “day at the office”, and, for a few moments, lose ourselves in this natural beauty. Can you tell that I am a Nigh Group fan? I would encourage anyone who is contemplating even a small landscaping project, to consider the Nigh Group. You will not be disappointed with the fresh perspective, and the creative way Nathan approaches each opportunity.
